Research
I am an Information Scientist making connections between people and data to discover new knowledge for evidence-based decision-making. At the Computational Science Initiative at Brookhaven National Lab I lead multi-disciplinary projects to create innovative approaches for scientific discovery, data management, and curation in scientific domains of interest to DOE, including Earth and Environmental Sciences, Materials Science, Extreme Scale Computing, Structural Engineering, and National Security. Current research interests focus on provenance for workflows at extreme scale, including performance provenance, computational reproducibility, and text mining. Previously at Purdue University, my research focused on aspects of preservation, sharing and re-use of research data, focused on Big Data curation for Libraries and the Research Office. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, I applied this research to scientific domains of interest to the Department of Energy, including High Performance Computing, Climate and Earth Sciences, and Homeland Security.
Learning
Another aspect of my activities is to encourage the adoption of data management and curation best practices within the research community and improve student learning related to data. I supervise and mentor student interns with the goal of educating young scientists. I received several mentor awards, including a DOE Outstanding Mentor Award for 2009.
